Engineering practices that teams can build on
Supporting an international engineering organisation with shared standards, secure delivery and clearer production ownership.
The shared challenge
A large-scale engineering organisation spanning the UK, Eastern Europe and India was delivering an education software portfolio generating £25m+ in annual recurring revenue.
The challenge was to give teams useful, consistent engineering practices while connecting product priorities, security and production responsibilities.
Where I fitted in
As Senior Manager, Engineering, I supported the teams and connected technical direction with delivery. My remit included engineering for Global Payments and working with Product on portal renewal and integration design.
This built on my earlier architecture role, where I worked with engineers on design reviews, threat modelling, secure coding guidance and technical decisions.
What we improved together
A standardised software development lifecycle helped the teams substantially increase release frequency. Shared practices made peer review and delivery expectations more consistent across the organisation.
Security controls and audit evidence became part of delivery for ISO 27001, ISO 9001 and Cyber Essentials certification. All engineering audit findings were resolved, with cross-team work also covering penetration testing and technical due diligence.
What carried forward
The teams retained shared engineering standards, clearer production ownership and security practices embedded in delivery.
My contribution was to help establish that foundation and support the people responsible for it. The measure of good leadership is whether the teams can keep making sound decisions and moving the work forward without relying on one person.
